Khai Liew is a multi-disciplinary design practice based in
Adelaide, Australia. It comprises a design studio and
workshop, where highly-skilled craftspeople produce one-off
design commissions, small-run furniture editions as well as
complete interiors. The studio also actively engages an
extensive network of artists and artisans to produce all
manner of work.
Khai Liew himself has expert knowledge in Australian
historical decorative arts and acts as a consultant to State and
National institutions, advising on acquisition and conservation
in the field of Australian material culture.
As a designer, he draws on this knowledge and on his
cultivated design language to produce useful, meaningful and
delightful work that speaks of its time, place, people and
culture. As such he occupies a unique place in Australian
contemporary design.
Liew is widely recognised for his dedicated contribution to the
development of a modernist Australian design aesthetic. In
2010 he was awarded the South Australian of the Year Arts
Award by the Government of South Australia, in 2016 he was
inducted into the Design Institute of Australia Hall of Fame,
acknowledging his important contribution to the Australian
design landscape. In 2017, he received the Design Institute of
Australia’s “Design Icon” Award, and in 2018, Liew was
recognised as a Design Luminary at the INDE awards in
Singapore.
Liew’s designs have been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum,
London, Design Museum, London and the Triennale De Milano.
His work is represented in the permanent collections of the National
Gallery of Australia, Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, Art Gallery of South Australia,
and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
